The Mystery Ramble trip is one of my favorite ideas.  It's a road trip with multiple days and multiple destinations, but only Mom and Dad know what is next.

Focus on one area of the state, and find attractions that are new and exciting to your children.  For our example, we'll focus on the Austin/San Antonio area.  The first day, in Austin, could involve a trip to the state capitol and the Bob Bullock Texas State History museum.  We recommend viewing an IMAX movie at the museum, so plan your trip according to what time a film of interest to your family will be shown.  The second day head south on I-35 to New Braunfels.  There you could surprise your kids with a trip to Schlitterbahn or a tube ride down the Comal river.  The Grist Mill restaurant is always a family favorite for dinner after a day on the river.  For the third and final day, you could head on down to San Antonio to visit the Alamo and Riverwalk or even Sea World.

The possibilities for a Mystery Ramble trip are endless.  The fun part of this trip is the Mystery.  Keep them guessing!  Each morning let the kids guess what might be planned for the day.

Tips to make this trip a success:

  • Plan ahead.  Make sure you have room reservations, restaurants, and attractions planned for each day.
  • Bring maps.
  • Don't over schedule.  Make sure to include down-time for the family to relax.  Sometimes a hotel pool provides the best memories.
  • To keep this trip exciting, save the best for last.
